Session_2_Flags is an exhibition that brings together 41 international artists, designers and thinkers.
The flag is perhaps representative of so many convergent principles it defies straightforward definition. It is at once associated with national identity, language and more broadly, the world of signs. It is a tool of protest, a method for solidarity, a means to establish propriety; a celebratory, communicative and political symbol. With this multivalence in mind, the organisers initiated a proposal whereby a group of practitioners were invited to each make a flag. The flags had to conform to specific dimensions, a 2:3 ratio - the most common for national flags - and it was stated that they would be posed as sculptural objects and exhibited on uniform poles in the gallery space. Session_2_FLAGS seeks to amass a range of responses to an apparently very simple task; to see how they function together, what they bring to each other, to their audience, to the space and to us the organisers.
